Blauwvaren / Blue Fern
The Blue Fern (‘Blauwvaren’ in Dutch) is a beautiful plant with big leaves. Because of the slightly curly edges it’s a challenge to make a direct print of it without faded outlines. As the light ‘bends’ around the subject where it makes no contact with the prepped paper, some outlines are softer.
Kozo paper
For this Blue Fern cyanotype I used kozo paper. It is handmade in Japan. Lightweight and it stays strong even when wetted. Kozo (Mulberry) bark became a cultivated plant used especially for paper and cloth making. With its long fibers, 100% Kozo papers are strong and durable and commonly used for woodblock and other printmaking like cyanotypes.
About Framing
This custom made wooden frame has elevated clarity glass creating 20mm distance between the glass and the artwork. The clarity glass protects the artwork without doing harm to the tangibility of the beautiful Japanese Kozo paper.
